Curaçao appeals against the release of undocumented migrants

WILLEMSTAD - The undocumented migrants in the SDKK prison have been released, but the Curaçao government is appealing. The government wants to appeal the July 14 verdict, which demanded the release of undocumented migrants.

The judge stated that Block 1 in principle meets the conditions for immigration detention. However, the policy that is applied appears to be stricter than in the rest of the prison. The Venezuelans had to spend eighteen hours a day in their cells. In addition, in the six hours that the plaintiffs are allowed to leave their cells, there is no view of the outside world and no meaningful daytime activities are offered. Criminal detainees, on the other hand, have a sports hall, library and workshop.

Justice Minister Shalten Hato indicates that there is little financial scope to meet the requirements, but that the legal basis for detaining and returning to the home country is in order. A solution will be sought for this in the short term. Therefore, the government will appeal the case.

All undocumented migrants have been released at this time, but they have had to provide their current whereabouts information.
