Curaçao’s Debt to Netherlands Includes Loans Running Until 2055

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao will remain financially connected to the Netherlands through outstanding government loans for nearly another three decades, with some obligations not scheduled to mature until 2055.

A detailed loan inventory contained in the Dutch government’s proposed 2027 Kingdom Relations budget shows that Curaçao has a wide range of outstanding loans with maturities stretching from 2030 to 2055.

The oldest listed loans date from 2010 and were associated with the debt restructuring surrounding Curaçao’s transition to autonomous country status within the Kingdom on October 10, 2010.

However, borrowing continued after 10-10-10.

The portfolio includes loans issued in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019, followed by additional financing in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025.

One of the most recent loans is XCG 115.7 million at 3.6 percent interest, with a 30-year term running from 2025 until 2055. Another XCG 76 million loan from 2025 carries an interest rate of 3.62 percent and runs until 2045.

The Dutch government explains that the original debt restructuring arrangement remains active until 2030, while loans issued as part of the restructuring can continue considerably longer.

The long maturities mean that decisions taken today concerning public borrowing could remain part of Curaçao’s government finances for a generation.
