WILLEMSTAD – Young people from the neighborhoods of Montaña, Rooi Santu, Sabana Baka, and Fuik (Páriba) are invited to join Zjeitu, a new creative development program launched by Wintertuin Curaçao. The initiative is designed for youth between the ages of 14 and 24 and begins on Friday, July 11, with free weekly workshops in poetry, visual arts, and photography held at the Montaña community center. 

Zjeitu aims to strengthen young people's self-image and confidence through creative expression. By using multiple art forms, the program also seeks to enhance social cohesion and expressive skills within the community. 

The sessions will be led by three local artists: photographer Brett Russel, spoken word artist Calviany Eleonora, and visual artist Janice Jansen. Together, they will guide participants through their respective artistic disciplines with a focus on experimentation, enjoyment, and self-expression. 

“We’re excited to bring art to our youth, because through art, we can talk to each other, share experiences, and build understanding,” said Calviany Eleonora, who will lead the poetry workshops. 

Participants will learn photography techniques from Brett Russel, including how to take striking photos using only their mobile phones—regardless of brand or model. The emphasis is not on the camera, but on the story behind the image. 

Visual artist Janice Jansen will use painting as a tool for emotional expression and mental relaxation. 

Kick-Off and Schedule 

The program kicks off on Friday, July 4, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Montaña community center. Weekly sessions will run every Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, starting July 11 through November 14. Four additional editing and reflection sessions will take place on November 21 and 28 and December 5 and 13.
