Zita Jesus-Leito opposes the creation of a national bank, citing risks and costs

WILLEMSTAD - Independent member of parliament Zita Jesus-Leito has voiced her opposition to the creation of a national bank, citing the significant risks and high costs that such an institution would entail.

Jesus-Leito argues that instead of establishing a national bank, commercial banks should be legally required to offer basic banking services to all residents of Curaçao, regardless of their background or risk profile.

The government, however, points to legal and practical limitations, including international regulations and risk assessments, that make imposing such a requirement complex. Despite this, Jesus-Leito advocates for utilizing existing mechanisms to promote financial inclusion. She views this approach as a safer and more effective alternative to setting up a national bank, which, in her view, could lead to risks such as political interference and disruptions to market competition.
