Zero tariff on import duties for electric vehicles

Local | By Correspondent July 17, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Finance Javier Silvania has given the green light for the introduction of a zero tariff on the import of electric vehicles and parts. This request came from the Chamber of Commerce and will apply to a wide range of vehicles.

This zero tariff applies to the import of electric tractors, buses for more than ten people, trucks for cargo transportation, and special vehicles such as fire trucks, crane trucks, and concrete trucks. Additionally, the import of motorcycles and electric bicycles also falls under this zero tariff.

Silvania has already instructed customs to implement this new tariff and to amend the so-called ALDA law to support this new measure.

Billy Jonckheer, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, expressed his hope in a letter dated July 12, 2023, for a swift implementation of this zero tariff. This can be an important step in promoting the transition to electric vehicles in the country.
