WILLEMSTAD - From November12th 2022 until the end of December Zanolino Gallery & Atelier will present a unique exhibition of works by visual artist Yubi Kirindongo and his friend and artist Steve Bridgewater.
Yubi Kirindongo, one of Curaçao’s most famous and successful artists, is mostly known for his chrome bumper sculptures, although he has worked with many different materials throughout his whole career. His newest series, which will be presented during the exhibition is made out of aluminum cans in combination with paint. The artist once more demonstrates his capacity to turn a material, most people consider trash, into beautiful works of art.
Even though Yubi Kirindongo is mostly known as a sculptor, his first creations were actually paintings. In the 70s he decided to take art more seriously and he set up an atelier in his home in The Hague. The atelier soon turned into a meeting point for other Antilleans with artistic ambitions. One of them was Steve Bridgewater who has been a close friend of Yubi ever since.

Yubi and Steve
Steve Bridgewater is a choreographer, musician, dancer and painter with a strong focus on African and Afro-Caribbean art and expression. He visited the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in The Hague and teaches art at Nilda Pinto SBO here in Curaçao. During the exposition he will be exposing a series of oil paintings.
“For me it is a big honor to expose my works together with Yubi. He has been one of my biggest inspirations and his early paintings have influenced me a lot. Not many big artists reach out their hand to uplift another artist.”
The opening of the exhibition will take place on November 12th 2022 from 16.00 - 19.00 at Zanolino Gallery & Atelier in Pietermaai 33, in the presence of the two artists and with an opening speech by art historian Josée Thissen-Rojer. This is the first exhibition organized by Zanolino Gallery’s new team of three.
And even though chrome bumpers have become very scarce Yubi, the “bumperman”, has managed to create a small collection of new bumper sculptures specially for this exhibition.
