WILLEMSTAD – The construction of a bridge in the Zakito lagoon has been given the green light. The Common Court of Justice has ruled that the bridge may be used occasionally by emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, which does not violate the conditions of the building permit.
The appeal was filed by Fundashon Pro Monumento (ProMo) and Amigu di Tera, who opposed the development plans in the coastal area. Their objections focused on the construction of a breakwater, refreshment culvert, and bridge as part of the large-scale redevelopment of Zakito. A previous ruling by the Court had already annulled part of the permit due to procedural errors.
The organizations argued that the constructions threaten marine life and damage coral reefs. However, the Court rejected those environmental concerns, stating that such objections fall outside the scope of the current permit review.
The bridge and culvert are part of a broader transformation of Zakito, which includes the development of a beach park and hospitality venues, aiming to boost recreational and economic activity in the area.
