Young man steals car at Jan Thiel and sells it for 800 guilders

Local | By Correspondent April 19, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - A 21-year-old mas has been sentenced to 180 hours of community service for stealing a rental car and then selling it for 800 guilders. The car in question was a Suzuki Jimmy model from a rental company in Jan Thiel.

The boy, C.N., took the car on December 10, last year. The theft was caught on camera. He admitted to his crime in court. He had been wanting to buy a car like that for a while but had not been successful.

After stealing the car, he parked it on the property of a friend in Rancho. Not long after, he realized the stupidity of his plan and sold the car for 800 guilders.

On January 23rd, the Suzuki was found. The rightful owners of the car declared that the car was damaged and had scratches that were not there before. The damage was estimated at 24,000 florins.

C.N. told the court that he was not responsible for the damage. He sold the car in the same condition as when he stole it.

During the requisition, the prosecutor stated that the police had received an anonymous tip that the man was a member of the criminal organization from Souax and Seri Kandela, which is involved in car thefts.

The public prosecutor took his age and the fact that his parents are very strict into account. A prison sentence was not appropriate, according to the prosecution. The prosecutor therefore demanded a community service sentence of 180 hours on conditions, combined with a driving course.

The judge agreed with the prosecution's demand. The damage must also be paid for. The vehicle was in perfect condition on the day it was stolen. What happened after that is the man's responsibility.
