World’s Fastest Private Submarine Begins Final Testing Phase in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent November 26, 2025

WILLEMSTAD - The world’s fastest private submarine, the Super Sub from Dutch manufacturer U-Boat Worx, has arrived in Curaçao for its final series of tests. The futuristic vessel, capable of reaching 9 knots underwater, surpasses the speed of most commercial and even many military submersibles in its class.

For U-Boat Worx, a global leader in luxury manned submarines, the arrival marks a major milestone in a development process spanning several years. Curaçao will serve as the proving ground where the submarine must demonstrate flawless performance before being delivered to its new owner.

A Leap Forward in Underwater Exploration

U-Boat Worx has produced more than 60 manned submarines since its founding in 2005, securing its position as the world’s market leader. The Super Sub is designed to push that leadership further by introducing unprecedented speed, power, and maneuverability to the private submersible market—an innovation particularly appealing to superyacht owners, billionaires, and expedition cruise operators seeking the next level of exclusive exploration.

Unmatched Speed and Agility

With a streamlined, droplet-shaped hull and advanced wing-like control surfaces, the Super Sub moves through the water with the agility of a marine animal. Its four in-house developed thrusters, producing a combined 100 kW of power, allow for steep 45-degree underwater climbs and fluid maneuvers comparable to those performed by dolphins or manta rays.

The manufacturer says the combination of speed, thrust and panoramic visibility represents a new era in civilian submarine technology.

Curaçao: Ideal Testing Ground

Curaçao was deliberately chosen for this phase due to its exceptionally clear, stable Caribbean waters, which offer ideal conditions for deep dives, maneuverability trials and stress testing. The island has long been used by U-Boat Worx as a pilot training site.

Engineers and field specialists are closely monitoring every aspect of the testing program. After completion, the submarine must be certified by DNV, one of the world’s strictest maritime classification agencies. Only once DNV grants its approval can the Super Sub be officially handed over to its owner.

High-Tech Engineering With Luxury Comfort

Despite its power, the Super Sub also prioritizes comfort. The vessel seats two passengers and a pilot, featuring ergonomic seats equipped with five-point harnesses essential for high-speed underwater travel. The ultra-clear acrylic dome provides 360-degree visibility, immersing occupants in the underwater world.

The interior is modern, minimalist and finished with premium materials, ensuring that the journey feels both thrilling and luxurious.

A Record-Breaking Vessel

If the tests in Curaçao are successful, the Super Sub will become the fastest and most advanced private submarine ever delivered—a technological milestone and a significant boost for Curaçao’s reputation as a premier testing and training location for cutting-edge marine technology.
