WILLEMSTAD – A 43-year-old woman has been convicted in a drug smuggling case involving an attempt to send 610 grams of cocaine in a package to Amsterdam.
The woman claimed during police questioning that she was unaware the package contained drugs. She stated that she sent the package as a favor for an acquaintance she knew through softball. However, the prosecutor argued that anyone sending a package under their name is responsible for its contents and must accept the legal risks if it contains illegal items.
The woman was unable to provide a clear explanation about the acquaintance or their whereabouts, prompting the prosecutor to seek an 18-month prison sentence, with eight months suspended. The judge, however, issued a lighter sentence: six months in prison, with three months suspended and a three-year probation period.
The case highlights the importance of accountability in package handling and the legal risks of assisting others without verifying the contents.
