Wit Gele Kruis Faces Significant Losses, Financial Stability Under Threat

Local | By Correspondent February 19, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Wit Gele Kruis (WGK) has reported significant losses for 2023 and 2024, with the organization struggling with a declining reserve. In 2023, the reserve dropped to 3.7 million guilders, following a loss of 300,000 guilders. For 2024, the organization anticipates a further loss of 700,000 guilders, bringing the reserve down to 3 million guilders.

WGK relies heavily on subsidies for its income, including 13 million guilders from the Social Insurance Bank for basic insurance and 2.2 million guilders from the Ministry of Social Development, Labor, and Welfare. Despite a slight increase in subsidies, contributions from the General Health Insurance Special Medical Expenses (AVBZ) continue to decline, largely due to a decrease in the number of AVBZ patients.

The director of WGK emphasized the importance of maintaining adequate reserves. The organization continues to face financial pressure due to declining revenues, while costs remain high, particularly due to personnel expenses, which make up 90 percent of its operational costs.

The director expressed hope that an investigation by the Healthcare Authority would result in a structural solution to the low tariffs that have been further undermining WGK’s financial stability. The next few months will be crucial in determining the future of the organization.
