WILLEMSTAD - King's Day in Willemstad promises to be a grand spectacle this year with a variety of activities organized by the local community and entrepreneurs. From traditional festivities in Pietermaai to a large-scale block party in Otrobanda and the well-known Orange Market in Punda, there is something for everyone.
In Pietermaai, where King's Day has been a fixture for seventeen years, the streets are painted orange with decorations and the presence of many visitors. Paul Lebbink and Wim Boereveen, the driving forces behind this event, organize various activities including Dutch games like sack racing and tin can throwing. "The strength of King's Day in Pietermaai lies in the diversity and collaboration between the entrepreneurs," says Boereveen.
Otrobanda confirms its reputation as an art district with a block party that emphasizes culture and creativity. Jo-Anne Ignecia-Evers of the shopkeepers' association SKO emphasizes the importance of culture and collaboration with the Creative Hub. "This day is all about creativity and fun for young and old alike," says Ignecia-Evers. The program includes live performances, a children's zone at Brionplein, and various stalls offering local and international products.
The Orange Market in Punda celebrates its thirtieth edition this year and remains an important economic and social event. Ed Craane, organizer of the market, is proud of the anniversary. "We have activities for all ages, and it's fantastic to see how different communities come together," says Craane. The market accommodates a hundred children and approximately 250 to 300 stalls, where both young entrepreneurs and experienced traders sell their goods.
Each location has its own unique way of celebrating the day, but the common theme is the celebration of Dutch culture and bringing the community together in Curaçao. The festivities start in the morning and continue until late in the evening, with the highlight being the block party in Otrobanda starting at 4:00 PM.
In addition to King's Day, King's Night is also a growing success. It starts today in Pietermaai at 5:00 PM and lasts until midnight, featuring special 'king's night markets' and performances by various DJs and bands, such as Bakabana and Soncc.
