Weto Wins Community Football Project ‘From Street to Stadium’

WILLEMSTAD – Neighborhood team Weto has claimed the title in the community football tournament From Street to Stadium, organized by the Fundashon Bicentini. In a series of exciting playoff matches against fellow district teams Fuik and Rooi Santu, Weto emerged as the period champion—not only for their skill on the pitch but also for exemplifying community spirit, respect, and youth empowerment across Curaçao.

Weto secured eight points from four matches, outperforming all other teams. Fuik and Rooi Santu both finished with four points, with Rooi Santu taking second place after a penalty shootout. The competition was intense: Weto defeated Fuik 1-0, Rooi Santu 2-0, and drew against both teams in the return matches.

Beyond the Game

Remko Bicentini, former head coach of Curaçao’s national team and founder of the organizing foundation, emphasized that the project is about more than just winning. “It’s about participation, respect, connection, and joy,” he said. “Weto showed class on the field, but above all, heart and soul for their neighborhood. In that sense, every team is a champion.”

As a reward for their participation, all three period champions received a day trip to Klein Curaçao. The prize was presented by Solange Istatia and her grandchildren, as a token of appreciation for the teams’ commitment, sportsmanship, and positive influence in their communities.

From Street to Stadium is a social initiative that uses football to build bridges between youth and their neighborhoods. According to the organizers, Weto’s success is just one of many stories demonstrating how sport connects young people, reveals talent, and fosters pride within Curaçao’s communities.
