WILLEMSTAD – Weto neighborhood team has emerged as the inaugural champion of ‘Van Straat naar Stadion’ (From Street to Stadium), a nine-month social street football initiative organized by the Fundashon Bicentini. Their victory marks the culmination of a transformative journey involving 14 teams from different neighborhoods across Curaçao.
Founder Remko Bicentini called the result historic: “Not only did they win the grand final, but they had also previously ranked as the best among all period champions. That’s phenomenal.”
More Than Just Football
From the outset, the project was about more than athletic performance. Young participants learned essential life skills such as teamwork, accountability, listening, and planning. “The real goal is what these kids take with them off the field—into their homes, schools, and neighborhoods,” said project ambassador Sharethsie Dometilia.
Guided by local role models including Rignald Hato, Germaine Manuel, and Tino Change, the tournament grew into a unifying experience. Simple rules—no offside debates, no arguments—put the emphasis on respect and shared enjoyment.
Neighborhoods Building a Future
Beyond football, participants engaged in workshops, clinics, and themed discussion nights reflecting on their roles in society. Parents and community members were also actively involved, attending sessions and contributing to the supportive environment.
“What touches me the most is the involvement of the entire community,” said an emotional Bicentini. “This is exactly why we do it.”
A Movement in the Making
Though the first edition has come to a close, the vision continues. “Participation is free,” said Bicentini, “but we ask for commitment and respect. This is just the beginning.”
