Watchdog Warns Curaçao Justice Ministers Are Interfering in Firearms and Event Permit Procedures

WILLEMSTAD - The Council for Law Enforcement (RvR) has concluded that Curaçao’s Ministers of Justice are regularly interfering in the procedures of the Special Laws Unit (UBW) of the Curaçao Police Force. As a result, applications for firearms permits and event licenses are not always being processed according to established regulations.

In its latest report, the RvR highlights that key oversight tasks are frequently left undone, raising serious concerns about the integrity and consistency of the licensing system. The watchdog also warns of structural deficiencies in Curaçao’s firearms registration and permitting policies.

According to the Council, political interference undermines the essential system of checks and balances meant to safeguard permit procedures. “The situation is further compounded by a chronic shortage of staff at the UBW, which increases administrative pressure and leaves insufficient time for proper supervision and enforcement,” the report states.

The findings reinforce longstanding concerns about transparency and governance within Curaçao’s justice sector. The Council’s report is expected to intensify calls for stronger institutional safeguards and improved resourcing to ensure that firearms and event permits are handled solely on the basis of law — not political influence.
