VVRP Ministry Issues Clarification on Statements Regarding Aqualectra

WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning (VVRP) has issued a clarification following reports on September 19 concerning utility company Aqualectra.

During an interview, a ministry official made statements that gave the impression Aqualectra employees were connecting water and electricity to illegal construction projects in contradiction to agreements with the ministry. The VVRP Ministry has expressed regret over the misunderstanding, stressing that these remarks do not reflect its official position.

The ministry emphasized that the issue of water and electricity connections to illegal constructions is a serious concern in the broader context of tackling illegality. For this reason, VVRP has been in communication with Aqualectra at both operational and strategic levels. While no formal agreements have yet been finalized, discussions are ongoing in a spirit of constructive cooperation.

The ministry further acknowledged and expressed respect for the essential role Aqualectra plays as the national utility provider, as well as for the dedication of its employees in delivering water and electricity services to the Curaçao community.

“The ministry regrets the confusion caused and any harm done by these statements,” VVRP noted in its release. It reiterated its commitment to transparent and constructive collaboration with Aqualectra and other stakeholders, with the shared goal of ensuring safe, legal, and sustainable spatial development in Curaçao.
