WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Business Association (VBC) wants the government, in addition to increasing the minimum wage, also discuss flanking policies in consultation with the social partners. This concerns measures to grow the economy.
VBC emphasizes the effect of global inflation and the major price increases on imported products for Curaçao. Employers could now pass on the costs for the wage increase in the prices of products. This is because many companies have not yet fully recovered after the pandemic. The costs of business operations in Curaçao would also be very high in relation to the other Caribbean Islands.
VBC would like to have a meeting with the government as soon as possible to discuss the flanking policies. According to the association, the increase in the minimum wage by more than 11 percent, too large for the companies to carry this heavy burden alone.
