‘Van Straat naar Stadion’ Highlights Sportsmanship and Character Development Among Young Players

WILLEMSTAD – Football took center stage last weekend during matches held as part of the ‘Van Straat naar Stadion’ initiative, but organizers say the focus extended well beyond goals and results. According to Remko Bicentini, initiator of the project on behalf of the Fundashon Bicentini, the program is primarily about fostering sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect among young players.

Bicentini emphasized that player development is not limited to technical skills. “Playing together, respecting your opponent, and accepting the referee’s decisions are essential parts of the learning process,” he said, noting that these values are central to the project’s philosophy.

One of the most striking matches of the weekend was the encounter between the neighborhood teams of Otrobanda and Rio Canario. Under the supervision of referee Fabian, the match started with high intensity. Rio Canario proved sharp in attack and built a comfortable lead early on. Otrobanda, however, showed resilience by fighting back from a four-goal deficit and continuing to press until the final minute. Despite the comeback effort, Rio Canario ultimately secured a narrow 5–4 victory.

Another match underscored the unpredictable nature of football. In the clash between Fuik and Oost-Jongbloed, Oost-Jongbloed controlled much of the game and dictated play for long stretches. Fuik, however, made efficient use of its scoring opportunities, resulting in a 3–0 win despite having less possession.

According to the organizers, the weekend’s matches demonstrated that ‘Van Straat naar Stadion’ serves not only as a platform for emerging football talent, but also as a setting where young players learn how to deal with both victory and defeat, while showing respect on and off the field.
