WILLEMSTAD - The work to demolish Sentro Pro Arte will soon begin. The goal is to completely tear down the old building and replace it with a brand-new, modern center. This was stated by the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Curaçao, Sithree van Heydoorn, during the discussion of the 2025 budget. According to the minister, one of the first steps is to adjust the structure of the foundation to comply with good governance regulations. Additionally, discussions are being held with the General Pension Fund of Curaçao about the potential establishment of a national theater in the future. The ultimate goal is to completely remove the current theater building on Schouwburgweg.
The minister indicated that the first cleaning efforts on the exterior will soon be visible. The plan is not to remove all the trees in the area, but to preserve what is possible and necessary. After the cleaning work, the building will be completely demolished. The process of obtaining the necessary permits for the demolition is currently underway, and once they are obtained, the start date for the work will be announced. Afterward, the construction of the new national theater will begin.
