Van den Tweel Issues Safety Warning for Frozen Blueberries Over Hepatitis A Risk

Local | By Correspondent January 15, 2025

WILLEMSTADVan den Tweel Supermarket has issued an urgent safety warning on Tuesday for its 1 kg AH Frozen Blueberries. The product is potentially contaminated with hepatitis A, posing a serious health risk if consumed.

As a precaution, the product has been immediately removed from store shelves. The warning applies not only to Van den Tweel locations in Curaçao but also to stores in the Netherlands and Bonaire.

According to the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), 12 cases of hepatitis A infection have already been linked to the consumption of these blueberries. The RIVM warns the actual number of infections could be in the hundreds, given the virus's extended incubation period.

Customers are strongly advised not to consume products with the expiration date of April 14, 2026, or earlier dates. Affected packages can be returned to the store for a full refund.

Van den Tweel has clarified that the warning applies exclusively to the 1 kg frozen blueberry bags. The supermarket apologized for the inconvenience and urged customers in all locations to remain vigilant and follow the RIVM’s advice.

This precautionary measure underscores the importance of public health and safety in preventing further cases.
