WILLEMSTAD – Vacation rentals, the so-called weekend houses, in Lagun illegally tap water and electricity. This became apparent after several checks that Aqualectra carried out this week in the area by the sea. Not all houses have been checked. The water and electricity supplier will continue to check in the coming days.
During the action in Lagun, four addresses were found where power theft took place, water theft was found at three addresses, and at one address it was found that the customer had illegally reconnected to the grid after it was disconnected due to non-payment.
Fine
The illegal connections have been disconnected from the Aqualectra network. The owners of the weekend houses must now take the right steps and contact Aqualectra to have their water and power connections repaired in a legal manner.
The four customers have been fined one thousand guilders. Two hundred and fifty guilders must be paid for any reconnection.
According to Aqualectra, the good suffers from the bad here. “However, there is a group of people in our community who are taking illegal actions by illegally connecting to the Aqualectra network,” said a press statement.
Method
Aqualectra has adapted its control methods. Where previously only the meter was checked and administrative measures were taken, the power is now shut off or the water is turned off until the customer comes to Aqualectra to solve the problem and pay any outstanding bills.
The cooperation of the customers is necessary for this. If the customer does not cooperate, Aqualectra can, in accordance with the provisions in the connection agreement, stop the water supply, the power supply, or both until everything has been installed according to the rules and outstanding bills have been paid.
