WILLEMSTAD - The American Consulate in Curaçao issued a warning on Thursday to all U.S. citizens planning to visit Sint Maarten, citing an increase in criminal activities on the island. The consulate advises Americans to exercise caution, particularly in the Dutch Quarter neighborhood.
Recent unrest occurred in the Dutch Quarter on Sunday night, where residents clashed with police during a large-scale firearms inspection. In light of this, the consulate also recommends that travelers remain vigilant during political demonstrations related to the parliamentary elections scheduled for August 19.
To enhance safety, the consulate offers the following tips for travelers:
Stay alert when walking or driving at night.
Keep a low profile.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Review your personal safety plans.
Avoid large crowds and demonstrations.
Travelers are urged to take these precautions seriously to ensure their safety while visiting Sint Maarten.
