Update: Unrest at TeleCuraçao, employees lay down work

Local | By Correspondent November 4, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - A number of TeleCuraçao employees went on strike on Wednesday. It has been rumbling for some time within the Antillean Television Company, which is TeleCuraçao’s mother company. The appointment of a statutory director, who is accused of bullying, has led to more unrest and fierce reactions from opposition parties PAR and MAN.

Minister Charles Cooper of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning (VVRP) called the situation "extremely worrisome" earlier this month. He has appointed Terry Hernandez to put things in order after CEO Hugo Lew-Jen-Tai was laid off. An investigation has been launched into, among other things, the credit card spending of the channel.

Several checks are currently taking place, which led to problems on Wednesday. Six employees would have stopped working and approached the ABVO union. As a result of the strike, several television programs could not continue, including the morning show Mòru Bon Dia.

The arrival of Hernandez would have led to a lot of unrest at TeleCuraçao. According to insiders, there would be a bad atmosphere and bullying behavior. Critical voices are heard about the situation at the station from politicians. According to the PAR, an employee would have been physically harassed by Hernandez. The party demands that Cooper have an independent investigation into the events through the Supervisory Board. Giselle Mc William is also critical on social media about the circumstances at the channel.
