WILLEMSTAD - The Fundashon Pro Monumento (ProMo) has launched a petition opposing the construction of so-called "concrete monsters" on the natural beaches of Curaçao. Within 24 hours, more than 6,000 people signed the petition titled "Save Our Beaches and Bays." According to Dennis Claus, a representative from the foundation, this overwhelming response demonstrates that the government's plans do not align with the public's sentiments. In addition to ProMo, environmental groups like Amigu di Tera and several organizations from the Bándabou area have also backed the petition.
The aim is to urge the government to reverse its proposed development plans for beaches and coastal areas such as Caracasbaai, Lagun, Zákito, and Jeremi.
The opposition party PAR has voiced concerns, arguing that the plans will prevent social groups, including seniors over 60, scouts, fishermen, and families, from continuing to use Lagun beach for their traditional activities. Many local residents also fear that construction at Lagun will negatively impact the turtles that nest in the area.
