UOVV: No Registration for Vehicles Without VIN or With Fake VIN

WILLEMSTAD – The Traffic and Transportation Service (UOVV) has issued a clear reminder: it is not possible to register or transfer ownership of any motor vehicle that lacks a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or carries a falsified one. Commonly referred to as the chassis number, the VIN is a unique factory code assigned to every vehicle.

According to UOVV, recent attempts to register motorcycles and other vehicles without VIN numbers or with falsified VINs have been on the rise. In some cases, imported vehicles have even been presented without any VIN at all.

To address this trend, UOVV, together with the Police Force of Curaçao (KPC), has introduced stricter controls and a new verification process designed to detect fraudulent or suspicious VINs more quickly. The measure is intended to prevent stolen or tampered vehicles from being registered on the island.

Stricter Inspections

During the registration process, experts will now carry out thorough checks of all documents, the VIN, and the engine number. If doubts arise, UOVV will request confirmation from the manufacturer or importer. In cases where fraud is suspected, the matter will immediately be reported to the police, following established procedures for such cases.

Protecting Citizens

The new approach is aimed at improving road safety and protecting consumers from unknowingly purchasing stolen or altered vehicles. UOVV also announced plans to launch a public awareness campaign to help residents identify false VIN numbers before buying a car or motorcycle.
