WILLEMSTAD – The University of Curaçao (UoC) has presented an ambitious Strategic Plan for 2025–2029 aimed at fundamentally transforming the institution into a leading national knowledge center while strengthening its role in the island’s socio-economic development.
The plan, titled “On the Road to 50 Years of Impact,” outlines a comprehensive roadmap leading up to the university’s 50th anniversary in 2029. It focuses on restructuring the organization, modernizing education and research, and deepening its impact on Curaçao and the wider Caribbean region.
At the heart of the strategy is a clear repositioning of the university as a catalyst for national development. The UoC aims to align its educational programs and research activities more closely with the needs of government, businesses, and society, while strengthening international partnerships.
Rector Magnificus Dr. Stella van Rijn emphasized that the university is entering a period of reinvention, with a strong focus on improving internal structures as a foundation for growth. The first phase of the plan prioritizes getting the “house in order” by streamlining processes, reducing inefficiencies, and addressing workload pressures among staff.
A key guiding principle in the strategy is the concept of “Planetary Health,” which links human well-being to environmental sustainability. This framework will influence both education and research, encouraging programs that address climate change, public health, social inequality, and sustainable development—issues considered particularly relevant for small island states like Curaçao.
The university also plans to expand its academic offerings, including the introduction of Associate Degree programs starting in 2025, as well as more flexible learning options such as micro-credentials and part-time education. These initiatives are intended to support lifelong learning and better prepare professionals for a rapidly changing labor market.
In addition, the UoC is exploring the creation of an artificial intelligence hub, which would serve as a center for research, education, and public engagement on emerging technologies. The institution sees this as an opportunity to position itself at the forefront of digital transformation in Curaçao.
The plan also highlights the need to attract more international students, partly in response to declining local demographics. At the same time, the university aims to strengthen ties with alumni and expand collaboration with regional and international academic institutions.
Research will play a more prominent role under the new strategy, with a focus on projects that directly address local challenges. The university intends to build a stronger research infrastructure and reduce dependence on external expertise by developing its own knowledge base tailored to Curaçao’s context.
Another major pillar is the improvement of campus facilities. The current campus, while considered unique, is described as outdated, prompting plans for upgrades and potential partnerships to modernize infrastructure and create a more attractive environment for students and staff.
The university also aims to strengthen its role in public debate by providing a safe and open platform for discussions on complex societal issues, reinforcing its position as an intellectual center for the island.
With approximately 1,200 students currently enrolled and a diverse student body drawn from Curaçao, the Caribbean, South America, and the Netherlands, the UoC sees itself as uniquely positioned to bridge local and international perspectives.
Ultimately, the Strategic Plan sets out a vision of a more agile, outward-looking university that not only educates but actively shapes the future of Curaçao. By 2029, the institution aims to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a fully transformed university with measurable impact on society.
The coming years will focus on translating the strategy into concrete annual plans, with implementation already underway and major reforms expected to unfold between 2025 and 2026.
