WILLEMSTAD - Tensions have arisen within the Curaçao Customs Department over concerns regarding the selection process for the verifier training course. Customs officers have expressed their concerns about potential irregularities, suggesting that management members may have favored their friends to participate in the training. This course provides an opportunity for career advancement, offering a chance to move up to a higher rank and salary.
The training for verifiers is crucial, as this administrative role oversees the inspection of imported goods and tax assessments. Due to a shortage of staff, the course is co-funded by the Netherlands and is offered in Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire. Candidates are required to undergo an evaluation in the Netherlands to qualify for the course.
Out of the 38 Customs officers from Curaçao who registered, only six passed the test. The controversy began when it was revealed that one candidate was allowed to retake the test multiple times, a privilege not afforded to others in the past. Furthermore, three of the six successful candidates are reportedly closely connected to the management team, according to sources within Customs.
Customs officers have also pointed out other concerning issues. One of the successful candidates had previously been involved in an incident related to the loss of a service weapon, but received a light penalty, while others involved in similar cases are still awaiting resolution. There is also skepticism surrounding another candidate who had previously failed the final exam for a lower rank but passed the selection process for this course.
