WILLEMSTAD The University of Curaçao (UoC) has officially appointed Stella van Rijn as its new rector. The formal handover ceremony took place on Monday, with Van Rijn succeeding Francis de Lanoy.

In her inaugural address, Van Rijn highlighted the university's crucial role in the sustainable development of Curaçao. She stated her intent to align UoC's focus with global transitions, ensuring students are well-prepared to actively participate in these changes.

“We aim to prepare students for an active role in these global transformations,” said Van Rijn. She also emphasized the importance of fostering stronger collaborations with the local business community, alumni, and other educational institutions on the island.

Van Rijn, who brings 14 years of experience as Secretary-General at the Ministry of General Affairs, expressed her vision to take the university to the next level. She emphasized that sustainability and innovation would be at the heart of UoC's growth.

Closing her speech on an ambitious note, she declared: “One might say this is too much to accomplish. Is it ambitious? Absolutely. Am I afraid of that? Absolutely not.”

The new rector's bold vision is expected to steer the University of Curaçao towards a dynamic and transformative future.
