WILLEMSTAD – Many civil servants in Curaçao hesitate to speak critically out of fear of negative consequences, according to Jourandy Leito, board member of the civil servants’ union Abvo.
Leito told local media that documents prepared by critical employees are sometimes deliberately delayed, while those submitted by more compliant colleagues are processed quickly. This practice, he warned, creates an atmosphere of insecurity and fear within the civil service.
“Civil servants must know their rights and obligations, otherwise they remain vulnerable,” Leito stressed. He added that while the union works hard to support its members, its efforts often depend on the willingness of the government to engage in good faith.
According to Leito, the issue reflects deeper problems in workplace culture within public administration and highlights the need for more transparency and fairness in how government employees are treated.
