Union members rally behind agreement with government

Local | By Correspondent October 17, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Members of the civil service unions ABVO, STrAF, and SAP have voiced their support for the preliminary agreement reached between the unions and the government. Earlier, these unions had negotiated terms with the government, but the agreement required approval from their members, which was conducted over yesterday and today. It appears that a majority of the members are satisfied with the terms, which paves the way for the withdrawal of the controversial discount law.

The discount law previously imposed a 12.5% reduction in employment benefits for public sector employees, a measure that had stirred considerable discontent among workers. The new agreement addresses the grievances stemming from this law and indicates a positive shift in negotiations between the unions and the government.

During the discussions regarding the repeal of the law, effective January 1, 2024, it was also established that civil servants and employees of special schools will be eligible for payments totaling over 42 million guilders by early 2025. This financial relief is expected to significantly alleviate the burden on public sector workers who have felt the effects of the earlier cuts.

The agreement is significant not only for its immediate financial implications but also for fostering a renewed sense of collaboration between the unions and the government. Union leaders expressed optimism that this development would enhance working conditions for their members and restore confidence in public sector employment.

Members from five different unions were consulted as part of the process to ensure that the voices of all civil servants were heard in the decision-making. The positive response from union members signals a united front in support of the agreement, reflecting a collective desire for improved labor relations and conditions within the public sector.
