Uncertainty Over Construction at Playa Hundu Raises Environmental Concerns

Local | By Correspondent March 13, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Construction work at the remote Playa Hundu beach has sparked concerns among residents and environmentalists, as it remains unclear whether the developments are legal. The site features a concrete structure in the sea, a wooden terrace, a staircase from higher ground, and an extended power cable with an outlet.

Local residents have raised alarm over potential damage to the natural environment and coral reefs.

Work Halted, but Legal Status Unclear

The construction has been temporarily halted, but no official confirmation has been given regarding its legality. Minister Charles Cooper (MFK), responsible for construction permits and oversight of illegal developments, has yet to provide clarity on whether a permit was requested or granted for the work.

The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) has confirmed receiving multiple reports about the situation. In cases involving marine construction, the Ministry of Traffic, Transport, and Urban Planning typically consults GMN for environmental advice. However, no final conclusions have been drawn regarding Playa Hundu.

Speculation Over Developer Involvement

Speculation on social media suggests that the owner of a nearby vacation villa may be behind the construction. The villa is rented out by Bright Sight Villas, located in Boca Sami. At the same address, a construction company, Hundu Construction and Renovation B.V., is also registered.

Neither Bright Sight Villas nor Hundu Construction have responded to inquiries regarding their involvement in the Playa Hundu development.

With no official statements from the authorities or developers, concerns remain over whether this coastal project adheres to regulations, and whether the fragile marine ecosystem of Playa Hundu is at risk.
