Three Registry Officials in Kranshi refuse to officiate same-sex marriages

Local | By Correspondent August 1, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Three civil registry officials in Kranshi have indicated that they are unwilling to officiate marriages between same-sex partners. Trade union ABVO will need to sit down again with the employees and the management of Kranshi, according to Gregory Wilson from ABVO.

The union representative believes that officials have the right to refuse to officiate same-sex marriages if it goes against their personal norms and values.

“The three officials feel unable to officiate such marriages because it conflicts with their moral standards.” The employees did not approach the union directly but went to their supervisor instead. The supervisor informed the ABVO union about the situation and discussed various scenarios.

According to Wilson, a situation must arise where everyone wins. He proposes that the parliament create legislation that exempts officials from duties that conflict with their morals. This would mean that when a law contradicts an official's moral beliefs, they could be excused from that duty.
