WILLEMSTAD - The ministries of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN), Traffic, Transportation, and Urban Planning (VVRP), and Justice are joining forces to tackle illegal waste dumping in Curaçao. This was announced during an inspection visit to a recently paved road in Scherpenheuvel West, where a significant amount of waste had been dumped.
Shortly after the road between Seru Loraweg and Caracasbaaiweg was paved, unknown individuals dumped large amounts of waste along the roadside, including old televisions, clothing, shoes, mattresses, plastic bottles, glass bottles, cans, buckets, styrofoam containers, car tires, construction debris, and mosaic tiles.
The three ministries are pooling their budgets to clean up Curaçao. The Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the Public Prosecutor's Office, will oversee enforcement. According to established measures, vehicles belonging to individuals caught illegally dumping waste three times will be confiscated and destroyed.
The government is also urging waste management company Selikor to move toward separated waste collection, which would involve introducing different colored bins for various types of waste.
