LONDON - A fake groom has been sentenced to at least 30 years in prison in England. The Curaçaoan stabbed 25-year-old Riches Obi to death when he came to his mother's defense. They had a dispute over a sham marriage scam. The perpetrator, Jurick Croes, was paid 500 pounds to enter into a sham marriage but became greedy. He devised a plan to steal 50,000 pounds from the woman. Her son tried to protect her but was fatally stabbed. Croes' two accomplices were also sentenced to prison. Raichell Felomina (40) received seven years and six months, and Suvenca Martis (35) was sentenced to eleven years and six months.
It is unclear whether Croes was supposed to marry Bernadette Orbi or if she was the intermediary who connected migrants with marriage partners. The woman worked at a law firm specializing in migration issues. She now lives in Nigeria and complains of permanent injuries. The perpetrators had tied her up in her bedroom. The death of her son has left her traumatized.
