The motion for screening MPs was shot down: concept remains on the table

Local | By Correspondent May 6, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A proposal to introduce a screening process for Members of Parliament (MPs) did not receive enough support to be put to a vote. The proposal, submitted by PNP MP Gwendell Mercelina, only received support from MAN faction leader Giselle McWilliam.

The failure to proceed with the vote came as only two MPs supported the proposal, while a minimum of three is required for consideration.

The concept motion, drafted by Mercelina, emphasizes the importance of public trust in democratic institutions, particularly the Parliament as the highest body within the governmental structure.

The proposal suggests a detailed and independent investigation by Parliament into convicted or suspected MPs, aimed at safeguarding the integrity of Parliament and restoring community trust.

During the meeting, Mercelina expressed his disappointment at the lack of support for his motion. He emphasized that integrity and transparency are crucial for the functioning of Parliament and that such a screening process would prevent MPs with a tainted past from retaining their positions.

While Mercelina only received support from McWilliam, the latter announced that her party was working on a code of conduct for MPs. This code, which will include rules on secondary activities and the prevention of conflicts of interest, will soon be presented to Parliament.
