Technical talks with Venezuela about opening borders start today

Local | By Correspondent January 30, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Today, talks between that country, Aruba, the Netherlands, and Venezuela will start in Curaçao about reopening the borders with that country. This will take place in the Acoya Curaçao Resort. The reopening must take place gradually, with the sea borders opening first.

First, the countries without Venezuela talk, then Venezuela joins. It is a meeting at the technical level, in which no ministers are yet involved. However, the Customs and Immigration Service and the Aviation and Maritime Authorities are present. For Curaçao the Directorate of Foreign Relations and for Aruba the Aruban equivalent, Customs, Civil Aviation Service DCA, Directorate of Shipping, and a representative of the Aruban government are present.

According to Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas, the intention is that the borders will soon open for Venezuelan fruit and vegetable boats. He previously clarified that reopening the borders to boats with fresh produce was not only important to reduce the high cost of food, but also crucial to restore air traffic with Venezuela so that people can travel back to their country.

Venezuela closed its borders with Aruba and Curaçao in February 2019.
