WILLEMSTAD - The teachers' union DOEN expressed satisfaction following a meeting last Thursday with members of the Permanent Committee for Education, Science, Culture, and Sports (OWCS) of the Parliament of Curaçao. The meeting was arranged in response to a letter sent earlier this year by DOEN to OWCS Chairman Sithree van Heydoorn and his party colleagues in Parliament.
Marbella Felipa, the chair of DOEN, stated on Saturday that union representatives reiterated during the session the need to prioritize education over party politics. According to Felipa, the union emphasized that improving the educational system should be a collective focus rather than a matter of political debate.
Concerns Raised About the State of Education
During the meeting, DOEN voiced serious concerns about the current state of the education system on the island. Felipa described the situation as alarming and highlighted the potential negative impact on the future of both the children and the island's development.
Although the specific details of the presentation and discussion were not disclosed due to the private nature of the committee meeting, Felipa emphasized that DOEN’s stance is well-known. "We are pleased that our message was understood, but now we have to wait and see what actions will be taken," she stated.
The union is hopeful that the concerns raised during the session will prompt concrete measures to address the challenges facing the education sector in Curaçao.
