Taxi drivers union raises concerns over proposed changes to taxi law

Local | By Correspondent November 14, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Taxi Drivers Union, SINUSTA, has expressed serious concerns regarding a proposed amendment to the taxi law. The revision process is currently underway, with taxi drivers given until November 20 to share their feedback through an online survey.

According to SINUSTA, the proposed changes could lead to unfair competition, allowing wealthy companies to control multiple taxi licenses. This could force small independent taxi operators to work at lower rates, making it difficult for them to compete.

Additionally, the new regulations would require assistant drivers to become full-time employees. Moreover, individuals who have been on a waiting list for years to receive their own taxi license might never get the chance under the new system.

SINUSTA is urging all taxi drivers to complete the survey before the November 20 deadline. The union has also scheduled a meeting for this Friday to explain the proposed changes, answer questions, and assist drivers in filling out the survey.
