WILLEMSTAD – Tax authorities from Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and the Caribbean Netherlands convened in a recent workshop facilitated by the Temporary Working Organization (TWO), formerly known as COHO, and the Tax Authority Caribbean Netherlands. The primary objective of this collaborative initiative was to foster knowledge exchange, share progress, celebrate successes, and address challenges in the ongoing development of the respective tax authorities.
The workshop provided a platform for each participating country to deliver presentations outlining the advancements and specific needs of its tax authority. Arjen Alberts, the project leader for Taxes within TWO for the Country Packages of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, emphasized the significance of the workshop in contributing to components of the Country Package.
Among the key topics discussed were the digital transformation of tax-related processes, addressing challenges related to data security, and enhancing organizational accessibility to better cater to customer needs. The Tax Authority Curaçao highlighted ongoing changes, including implemented improvements and planned developments to enhance effectiveness and address structural issues.
Sint Maarten is currently preparing to modernize its outdated IT infrastructure, with a focus on addressing understaffing issues within the Tax Authority. The Country Package allocates resources to support this reform and improve overall customer service.
The Tax Authority Caribbean Netherlands, on the other hand, has undergone substantial transformation since October 10, 2010, including changes in fiscal legislation, administrative responsibility, and overall organization. Over the past 13 years, the organization has successfully transitioned from paper-based to predominantly digital operations, leading to increased revenues and streamlined processes.
The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for participants to share insights and experiences, particularly in areas such as digitization, system security, and recruitment challenges. The collaborative effort is expected to result in strengthened regional cooperation and ongoing support through professional group meetings, training opportunities, and further exchange of best practices.
