Szabó commits to optimizing Netherlands-Caribbean relations

Local | By Correspondent June 20, 2024

THE HAGUE - As of July 2nd, Szabó will assume the role of State Secretary for Kingdom Relations on behalf of the PVV. Despite his party’s controversial statements in the past, such as Wilders’ 2008 remark about "rogue islands" and MP Kathmann’s (GroenLinks-PvdA) reminder of the PVV's stance that no more money should go to the islands, Szabó is focusing on the future. He emphasizes that his actions will be based on the current coalition agreement and not on previous statements.

Szabó, a former member of the VVD, declared that a new situation would arise from his inauguration on July 2nd. “At home, we always say ‘and keep going,’” said Szabó. He aims to optimize the relationships between the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. With this commitment, he seeks to allay concerns about the PVV’s stance towards the Caribbean islands and outline a positive path forward.

Today, the candidate ministers were heard in the House of Representatives, and Szabó made these statements in the context of his introduction there. During this meeting, he emphasized his intention to work constructively towards improving mutual relations within the Kingdom.
