Swimmer stung at Caracasbaai, possibly by Spotwing Comb Jellies

Local | By Correspondent February 5, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A swimmer was stung or bitten by an unknown sea creature this morning at Caracasbaai. The victim has been transported to the CMC hospital for medical treatment.

The exact nature of the sea creature was initially unclear, but marine biologist Marc Vermeij from the Curaçao Research Institute Carmabi suspects it might be Spotwing Comb Jellies (Ocyropsis maculata).

As a precautionary measure, the police have temporarily removed people from the water at Caracasbaai and advise caution in this area.

Spotwing Comb Jellies are generally not known for their aggressive behavior towards humans and typically do not sting unless directly touched.

Marine biologist Vermeij emphasizes that, although Spotwing Comb Jellies are generally harmless to humans, the swimmer likely came into contact with a different type of jellyfish that can react with a stinging response. The investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident is still ongoing.
