AMSTERDAM - The trial against the nine suspects in the murder case of journalist Peter R. de Vries has begun in the Amsterdam-Osdorp court. The suspects, including Delano G. with Aruban family ties and Curaçao natives Divainy K. and Ludgardo S., have either denied their involvement in the case or invoked their right to remain silent.
The alleged shooter, Delano G., declared in the crowded courthouse bunker: "I invoke my right to remain silent entirely." This means he chooses not to make statements that could potentially be used against him in court.
Erickson O., another suspect, gave a brief statement denying any involvement in the murder. "I didn't know who he was, and I didn't know he was a public figure," he said about Peter R. de Vries. He also denied passing on information or being part of a criminal organization. However, when later under oath, a situation in which lying is punishable, he refused to confirm his statement and invoked his right to refuse to answer certain questions to avoid self-incrimination.
The substantive treatment of the criminal case began on Tuesday. The suspects are accused of involvement in De Vries' death in July 2021. The case is spread over eight days, and the sentencing is expected next week. The judge's verdict is scheduled for June.
Peter R. de Vries was shot on July 6, 2021, in Amsterdam after appearing on RTL Boulevard. He succumbed to his injuries nine days later. The alleged perpetrators of the attack, Kamil E. and Delano G. were arrested shortly after the incident, with a previous life sentence demand against them.
However, the trial had to be reopened after the Public Prosecutor discovered a new witness. As a result, a portion of the case must be reconsidered.
