Suicide attempt by detainee awaiting transport to SDKK prison

Local | By Correspondent November 30, 2023

WILLEMSTAD – A detainee awaiting his return to the SDKK prison attempted suicide at the courthouse after the hearing of his case. Members of the National Special Services (LBD), responsible for maintaining public order in the courthouse and escorting detainees, informed their union members of Straf and NAPB about the incident.

They observed that the detainee, waiting for transportation back to the prison, began tearing his clothes and creating loops with the intention of self-harm or worse.

Discontent

LBD members acted quickly to prevent further harm. This incident is considered the last straw, as there has been ongoing discontent with the current procedure. Many believe that detainees should be immediately returned to the SDKK prison after their court hearing, rather than having to wait for an extended period, as is often the case.

Detainees often must wait until the cases of other detainees are resolved before they can be transported back to the prison. This leads to complaints from detainees about hunger, fatigue, and sleep deprivation due to the prolonged waiting. The problem is exacerbated by a shortage of transportation for detainees.

LBD members have long advocated for a special transport vehicle at the courthouse to efficiently escort detainees. Due to the lack of transport, they must wait for transportation from Barber, which significantly takes more time. Union members gathered at the courthouse to evaluate the situation and seek a solution.
