Local, | By Press release February 9, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – On Thursday, February 5, the Directorate of Risk Management & Disaster Policy (DRR) hosted an engaging and well-attended masterclass on current geopolitical developments worldwide. The event brought together a broad group of professionals and stakeholders from the fields of crisis management, security, and strategic planning.

The keynote speaker was Rob Bauer, former Chief of Defence of the Netherlands and former Chair of the NATO Military Committee, the highest military authority within the alliance. He currently serves as a strategic advisor at Deloitte.

During the session, Bauer was joined by two additional experts: Sjoerd van der Smissen, partner at Deloitte Netherlands responsible for Governance & Public Services, and Eleonora Russell, a specialist in strategic communications with extensive expertise in crisis management.

Participants received in-depth insights into the evolving global geopolitical landscape, rising international tensions, and the implications for regional stability and security. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of timely preparation and effective communication before, during, and after crises or disasters.

For DRR, the masterclass marked an important step in strengthening knowledge and preparedness among professionals and institutions involved in disaster and crisis management. The event also represented the first official activity organized by the newly established Knowledge Center for Crisis Management within DRR. This center focuses on research, knowledge development, and the analysis of relevant trends and challenges within the field of disaster and crisis management.

DRR intends to organize additional masterclasses and knowledge-driven sessions in the future, with the aim of further enhancing the capacity, expertise, and readiness of all professionals and agencies involved in safeguarding the community.
