WILLEMSTAD - With just over three weeks to go until Fuikdag on Sunday, January 7, 2024, the coast guard, police, and other authorities announce heightened controls at sea and along the coastlines. These measures aim to enforce the rules established by the government of Curaçao and maintain public order during this popular event.
The coast guard has called on owners of pleasure boats, charter boats, and seadoos to be mindful of the specific rules applicable to Fuikdag. "We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable day, but safety comes first," emphasizes a coast guard spokesperson.
One notable measure is the prohibition of alcohol sales throughout the entire day. Additionally, playing music on rafts or stages is not allowed after 5:00 PM. These restrictions are intended to limit disturbance and enhance safety.
All boats must be equipped with an adequate number of life vests for the permitted number of passengers and possess the correct ship documents. Safety items such as signaling devices and whistles are also mandatory. Port and safety inspection, together with the coast guard, will enforce these requirements. The Fire Department will also oversee the use of open fire on board, particularly concerning barbecues.
An important warning also pertains to hitchhiking or using water taxis to Fuik Bay; this is strictly prohibited. Such practices have led to chaos and safety risks in the past.
International boats must enter through immigration and customs, officially registering. The coast guard, police, and other enforcing authorities will rigorously address violators of these rules.
During Fuikdag 2024, the coast guard and police, along with the Port and Safety Inspection, fire department, customs, Santa Barbara security, the Red Cross, Fundashon Kuido Ambulance Curaçao, and Citro, will be present for inspection and assistance. This collaborative effort aims to ensure a safe and orderly Fuikdag for all attendees.
