Strict protection system by Aqualectra contains damage from cyber attack

Local | By Correspondent December 7, 2023

Aqualectra has practically normalized all its services.

WILLEMSTAD - As part of its protection system against cyber-attacks, Aqualectra recently had to disconnect all online connections to restore its customer service to clients. Aqualectra technicians conducted the necessary analyses to ensure that the attack had no effect. Aqualectra has now fully restored its services to clients and is finalizing the last tasks to restore all its internal systems that support daily operations in a responsible manner.

Utility companies worldwide are vulnerable to cyber-attacks, and Aqualectra is no exception. One may recall the incident in Sint Maarten where it took more than a year before the utility company could restore service. Aware of the possibility of attacks, Aqualectra has continuously worked on digital solutions that can provide the best possible protection. There are cyber-attacks that the protection system detects and takes necessary action immediately, but some may be more sophisticated. In such cases, Aqualectra's systems are programmed to automatically disconnect from the cyber network to provide the appropriate protection. Once the system does this, a thorough analysis is needed to ensure that there was no penetration or damage within Aqualectra's systems. Once it is confirmed, systems and services can be responsibly restored.

It is important to emphasize that in none of the power outages that Curaçao experienced was there any indication of a cyber-attack. Meanwhile, all customer service applications are operational again. Aqualectra technicians have worked diligently, and practically all the company's systems are functioning normally again.
