Local | By Press release December 12, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Fundashon Kas Popular (FKP) and the Ministry of Traffic, Transportation, and Urban Planning (VVRP) have jointly unveiled an innovative program to structurally reduce the housing shortage in Curaçao. The initiative, called “Mi Kas Awor” (My Home Now), combines creative affordable housing solutions with economic development and social progress, emphasizing sustainability and inclusion.

The Mi Kas Awor Program

The program focuses on building affordable homes supported by a home purchase subsidy scheme tailored for low- and middle-income households. This unique model gives families the opportunity to own their own homes with monthly expenses comparable to renting.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The program promises significant economic stimulation for Curaçao:

Employment: By creating 19,175 direct and indirect jobs, the program is expected to generate NAf 698 million in annual wages.

GDP Growth: It will contribute NAf 305 million to the annual GDP, fostering growth across various sectors.

Fiscal Benefits: With exemptions on sales tax and import duties for construction materials and technology, the program is projected to generate a positive fiscal balance of NAf 550 million over 60 years.

Addressing Poverty and Promoting Social Cohesion

The home purchase subsidy program helps families build wealth and achieve financial stability, providing a structural solution to poverty. It aims to improve the quality of life and strengthen social cohesion within communities.

Sustainability and Quality of Life

The program incorporates sustainable construction methods and environmentally friendly solutions. Housing projects will include essential facilities, ample green spaces, and access to public transportation, contributing to livable and innovative communities.

A Shared Vision

Charles Cooper, Minister of VVRP: “With this program, we are taking a crucial step to address the housing shortage and create a sustainable future for our community. This is an example of effective collaboration between the government and public organizations.”

Arthur Con, Director of FKP: “Mi Kas Awor is a strategic response to Curaçao’s greatest challenges: housing shortages, economic inequality, and social progress. Together with the Ministry of VVRP, we are committed to making this vision a reality.”

Government Support

The program seeks an annual investment of NAf 15 million, increasing to NAf 27 million after 2030. With this support, it aims to reduce the housing shortage within 8 to 10 years and help thousands of families gain access to dignified housing.

This initiative represents a major step forward in addressing Curaçao’s housing crisis and fostering economic and social development on the island.
