WILLEMSTAD - A very strange traffic accident on Saturday has cost the life of a 72-year-old Curacao resident. The second victim this weekend. The accident happened in front of a mini market in the Dein neighborhood.

Jose Antonio Farrell was sitting on the sidewalk on a chair in front of the store, when a car suddenly hit him when the driver was trying to park.

An investigation by the police has shown that the driver of the car wanted to brake, but with her foot hit not the brake pedal but the accelerator pedal. According to witnesses, the woman drove with a leg cast.

The man was seriously injured in the collision and was rushed to the hospital. He died of his injuries there on Sunday morning.

With his death, the number of fatal road victims this year is two. A motorcyclist in Otrobanda already died on Friday evening in a head-on collision.

Every year between 17 and 20 people die in traffic in Curaçao. According to the police mainly due to too high a speed, not paying attention when crossing the road, not giving priority and reckless driving. Most victims in 2018 and 2019 did not wear a seat belt during the accident.
