THE HAGUE - In a recent development, State Secretary Van Huffelen has underscored the need for the Pisas cabinet in Curaçao to demonstrate greater decisiveness in implementing reforms outlined in the Country Package. The call for tighter control and proactive action was highlighted in a letter addressed to the House of Representatives, reflecting on her recent working visit to the region.

Expressing her concerns, Van Huffelen emphasized the critical issues facing Curaçao, including a significantly underperforming economy characterized by a substantial informal sector, a notable presence of undocumented residents, alarming educational standards, and pervasive poverty-related challenges. She stressed the urgency for swift and assertive measures from the Pisas government to address these pressing issues.

"The current political direction regarding the Country Package in Curaçao is troubling," remarked Van Huffelen, indicating the need for more effective governance and oversight. "Decisiveness and stringent oversight from the Pisas government are essential. However, I see room for improvement in these aspects."

Van Huffelen emphasized the paramount importance of implementing comprehensive reforms to enhance the well-being of the local population. She reiterated that addressing the structural challenges requires robust and coordinated efforts from the government.

The State Secretary's observations were further underscored by the recurring delays evident in implementation reports, attributed to fluctuating planning, capacity constraints, and sluggish decision-making processes. Additionally, she highlighted the untapped potential of the Temporary Working Organization, urging for its enhanced utilization to bolster reform efforts effectively.
