Starlink may be available in Curaçao next year

Local | By Correspondent August 5, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Bureau Telecommunicatie & Post (BT&P) is currently working on updating the telecommunications concession regulations, according to Edwin Bogerd, the 'Chief Legal Officer' at BT&P. Once these concessions are amended, it may become possible for Starlink to offer internet services in Curaçao. At present, Starlink is only authorized for limited maritime purposes.

Starlink, known for providing high-speed internet at a low cost, has indicated on its website that it aims to offer services in Curaçao by the end of this year. Bogerd expressed hope that the government's concession adjustments will be completed by then, potentially allowing Starlink to start providing internet on the island in 2025.

In Caribbean Netherlands, the Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate established last month that it is not permitted to use Starlink's internet services unless the company obtains a proper concession. The inspectorate had noticed that Starlink satellite dishes were already in use in the region.
